The New York Times featured NMPP.
The New York Times article highlights our work at the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership (NMPP), as a maternal-health organization serving predominantly Black and brown mothers in Harlem. NMPP’s doulas provide crucial emotional and childbirth support to clients who often face unstable housing, migration challenges, and limited access to care. The article notes that many of our pregnant patients are increasingly anxious about potential Medicaid cuts that could limit access to doula services. Naima Beckles, our doula coordinator, explains that Medicaid coverage is essential for the women they serve, many of whom could not otherwise afford support. While New York’s funding for doulas is relatively secure for now, the organization worries that national policy changes could threaten this safety net. The piece underscores how central NMPP’s work is in reducing maternal-health disparities in one of the city’s most vulnerable communities.

Breastfeeding Support
In August, we celebrated Breastfeeding Awareness Month—recognizing the many health benefits for both mothers and babies. NMPP continues to ensure families have access to resources, guidance, and encouragement for a positive breastfeeding experience. Every Thursday, new mothers receive one-on-one breastfeeding support from our dedicated maternal nurse.

April 11th - 17th is BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK (BMHW).
As we recognize the tireless efforts of doulas, community organizers, healthcare providers, and parents on the frontlines, we also call on our broader networks to act. Black Maternal Health Week is not only a time of remembrance, but of reckoning, and of recommitment.

This month is dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse and neglect, while highlighting upstream solutions that address the root causes—like poverty, systemic inequities, and lack of support. CAP Month is also a time to explore how we can better serve children and families disproportionately impacted by the child welfare system through culturally responsive care and purposeful prevention.

Mothers’ Voices
Maternal Intentions (MI), a project funded by Merck for Mothers, provided clinical care coordination, case management, health education and tactical support to women at risk of having poor pregnancy outcomes due to chronic illness.
Community Health Workers (CHWs) conducted home visits and escorts to clinical providers, and Doulas provided both birth and post- partum doula care. Mothers in the program had a team looking out for their health, encouraging and facilitating their engagement with providers when needed, so they could have safe births and stay safe in the post-partum period. The team also provided resources and assistance needed to prioritize the mother’s health and manage their chronic illnesses.
